The five Vows of The United Methodist Church
Every member of the United Methodist Church makes promises to keep five vows. These vows—prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness—guide us in living a faithful and impactful Christian life as United Methodist Christians.
Prayer
Prayer is the foundation of our relationship with God. Through prayer, we connect with God, lift up our concerns, and listen for His guidance. It is an essential part of our spiritual growth and helps us align our lives with God’s will and the ways in which he works uniquely in us.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”
Philippians 4:6
Set aside five minutes each day this week to pray intentionally for someone in your life. Whether it’s a friend, a family member, or even a stranger, lift them up in prayer.
How can I make prayer a more consistent and meaningful part of my daily routine? Also, am I praying for things I bring only? Or do my prayers reflect my ability to listen to what God brings as well?

Presence
Being present in the life of the church and the community is a vital aspect of our faith. Your presence at worship services, Bible studies, and church activities strengthens not only your faith but also the community’s. Along with being present in the life of the church, we must stay attune to how we are being present with God each day of our lives.
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”
Matthew 18:20
Make a commitment to attend church services or Bible study regularly for the next month. If you’re already attending, consider inviting someone new to join you.
In what ways can I increase my presence in the life of my church and community?

Gifts
God has blessed each of us with unique gifts, including time, talents, and financial resources. By offering these gifts to God, we contribute to the church’s mission and the well-being of others.
“Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”
2 Corinthians 9:7
Identify one of your talents or resources that you can offer to the church or someone in need this week. It could be volunteering your time, sharing a skill, or making a financial contribution.
How can I use my gifts more effectively to serve God and others?

Service
Service is a core expression of our faith. As followers of Christ, we are called to serve others, both within the church and in the broader community, demonstrating Christ’s love through our actions.
“The greatest among you will be your servant.”
Matthew 23:11
Find an opportunity to serve this week, whether it’s through a church ministry, a local charity, or simply helping a neighbor. Small acts of service can have a big impact.
What steps can I take to serve others more consistently and with a joyful heart?

Witness
Our witness is how we share our faith with others, both through our words and our actions. By living out our faith authentically, we inspire others to seek a relationship with Christ.
“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Acts 1:8
Share your faith story with someone this week. It could be a conversation with a friend or posting something on social media that reflects your beliefs.
How can I become a more effective witness to those around me?
