Seeking God First

Lessons from the Sermon on the Mount

In our busy lives, worry can feel like an ever-present shadow. We stress over what to eat, how to dress, and how to manage our daily tasks. Yet Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6 that our lives are worth more than our fears. His words invite us to cast aside our anxieties and trust in His care.

God’s Care for Creation

Jesus points to everyday examples to remind us of God’s tender care.

  • The Birds: They do not plant crops or store food, yet God feeds them.
  • The Flowers: They grow naturally without effort, and their beauty surpasses even the finest garments.

These simple truths encourage us to trust that if God looks after nature, He will provide for our needs as well. His care covers every detail of creation—and our lives are included.

The Nature of Worry

Worry tends to creep into our daily routines. We stress about what to wear, our finances, our health, and our relationships. In a study conducted in 2019, participants recorded every anxious thought they had over a ten-day period. When researchers compared these worries with what actually happened, they discovered a surprising fact:

  • 91.4% of the recorded worries never came true.

This statistic shows us that most of our fears are not based on reality. Even when we know this, our minds often focus on the small chance that something might go wrong. That tiny focus creates a heavy burden and steals the joy from our days.

The Trap of Anxiety

Anxiety builds invisible walls around us. These walls are meant to protect us from pain, but they also block us from experiencing life fully. When we fixate on potential problems, we risk missing out on the blessings right in front of us. Our doubts convince us that every challenge is insurmountable, even when the odds are slim. In this trap, we lose sight of the peace that comes from trusting a loving God.

Trusting God with Our Tomorrow

Jesus gives us a clear command: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Each day brings its own challenges, and when we focus on the present, we allow God to work in our lives. By putting His kingdom first, we move our focus from our own limited plans to the endless care God offers.

Trusting in God means believing that He will supply what we need as we live one day at a time. His assurance frees us from the need to control every detail and reminds us that our worth is not measured by our ability to manage worry but by His love for us.

Practical Steps to Release Anxiety

Letting go of worry is a process. Here are some simple ways to begin:

  • Cast Your Cares on God: Scriptures like Psalm 55:22 and 1 Peter 5:7 invite us to give our worries to the Lord. When we do, we lighten our emotional load.
  • Focus on Today: Try not to let fears about the future steal the joy of the present. Notice the small blessings—a smile from a friend, a warm ray of sunshine, or a moment of quiet reflection.
  • Set Aside Time for Reflection: Take moments throughout your day to pause and remind yourself of God’s promises. These quiet times can help reset your mind and spirit.
  • Trust in God’s Provision: Remember that God cares for all of His creation. Let this truth guide you when worry begins to take hold.
  • Engage with Your Community: Sharing your struggles with trusted friends or a faith group can help ease the burden. We are never meant to face our worries alone.

Each of these steps can lead you away from anxiety and toward the peace that comes with trusting in God.

Final Thoughts: Embracing a Life of Trust

The message of Matthew 6 is clear: while our needs are real, most of our worries are not. When we choose to trust in God, we let go of the heavy burden of anxiety. We learn to live in the present and to see the beauty and care that surround us every day.
